Poetry Month Kick-Off with Geoff Brock
The Farrar Straus Giroux Book of
Twentieth Century Italian Poetry
edited by Geoff Brock
April is poetry month and we are starting the month out right with an evening of Italian poetry.
Editor Geoffrey Brock and contributing translators John DuVal and Van Brock will read selections from The FSG Book of 20th-Century Italian Poetry.
This major new anthology offers a broad survey of modern Italian
poetry, including such major figures as Montale, Ungaretti, and
Quasimodo, as well as more contemporary poets such as Patrizia Valduga
and Valerio Magrelli.
In its recent starred review, Booklist said
that these poets -- thanks to "translations by Anglophone poets and
translators of legendary status (Ezra Pound, Marianne Moore, Samuel
Beckett, James Merrill, Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes, William Weaver) --
"all seem brilliant, all quintessentially Italian in their resplendent
gaiety, gusto, and, more often, haunting, umber somberness."
